Staff Engineer - Pricing

Who We Are: We are rebuilding the energy transaction, making it transparent and fair. Our goal is to put power back where it belongs, in the hands of customers and to take on one of the most critical problems of our century, access to low cost electricity. tem exists to fix a broken global energy market that’s long favoured legacy operators, intermediaries, and opaque pricing. Today’s electricity system was not designed for rapid decarbonisation, AI-driven efficiency or fair access for the actual users - businesses and generators. We’ve built the first AI native transaction infrastructure to reinvent how electricity is bought, sold and priced. Our technology is designed to cut out the inefficient fees, automate complex market flows, and bring transparency and fairness to energy transactions at scale. In late 2025, after extraordinary growth, we closed a $75 million Series B - led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from Albion, Atomico, Allianz, Hitachi Ventures, Hitachi Ventures, Schroders Capital and others - positioning us for global expansion, deeper product innovation and category leadership. We’re scaling internationally and building toward a future where AI-driven infrastructure is foundational to electricity markets worldwide. Since launch, our modern utility product, known as RED, has already facilitated thousands of business customers and billions in energy transaction value, proving that modern software and AI can transform an industry built on legacy systems. At tem, we’re not just building another energy company, we’re rearchitecting market infrastructure so that transparency, efficiency and sustainability become the default, not the exception. THE ROLE We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Pricing. You'll build and manage the Pricing API behind RED, tem's modern utility product - its performance, and its reliability. The systems you build price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it, so correctness shows up as money and speed shows up as trust. This is a senior role in our Pricing squad. The focus is backend and data-heavy, with a quant-y flavour, and correctness is critical. You'll shape how our new Pricing API is built, untangle pricing from the systems around it, and make sure that when we can't price something, we can always explain why. In your first 12 months, you might: • See our new Pricing API built from first design through to being ready for third-party access. • Lead the move of pricing logic into one service with a clean boundary, deciding when it is proven stable enough to cut over. • Design the detection, alerting and explainability that catch bad or slow prices before they ever reach a customer. • Help make pricing measurably faster for every customer quote. • Raise the engineering bar across the squad through design reviews, standards and agent-driven workflows. RESPONSIBILITIES • Build & iteration of the Pricing API, so it is fast, correct and ready to be opened up to third parties. • Support with untangling: run the extraction of pricing logic into its own service as a programme, agreeing clean boundaries with neighbouring teams. • Own reliability: design the systems that detect pricing errors, stop bad quotes going out and explain every price we can't give. • Raise the bar: lift the standard of everyone working on pricing through design reviews, engineering standards, pairing and multi-agent workflows. • Close the loop: be the go-to engineer when live pricing incidents escalate, and turn what you learn into structural fixes on the roadmap. REQUIREMENTS Must-Haves • Deep production backend Python: you have designed and owned APIs at scale, and been the person others escalate to when they broke. • You have led a significant decoupling or migration of a live system without breaking what depended on it. • Strong FastAPI and SQL, and experience in data and analytics-heavy systems where the correctness of numbers costs money. • You set technical direction across teams you don't manage, and can negotiate service boundaries with neighbouring teams. • You are agent-native: you don't just use Claude or similar daily, you design multi-agent workflows that raise a whole team's throughput. • Product engineering judgement: you know who reads a price and why, and you trade off speed, accuracy and explainability deliberately. Desirable • Domain knowledge from energy pricing, fintech or neo-utilities. • Experience building APIs consumed by external third parties. • AWS and serverless patterns (Lambda, event-driven services, Postgres on RDS). • Polars, or a track record of making numerical code fast. BENEFITS & PERKS • Stock options so everyone has ownership in our mission. • 25 days holiday plus public holidays. Swap public holidays for the ones that matter most to you, and enjoy your birthday off. • Remote first and flexible working, …

At tem, we’re not just building another energy company, we’re rearchitecting market infrastructure so that transparency, efficiency and sustainability become the default, not the exception. THE ROLE We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Pricing. You'll join the Pricing squad, the team behind the pricing engine at the heart of RED, tem's modern utility product. The systems you build price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it, so correctness shows up as money and speed shows up as trust. This is a backend, data-heavy engineering role with a quant-y flavour. You'll help build our new Pricing API, make prices fast, accurate and understandable, and make sure that when we can't price something, we can always explain why. In your first 12 months, you might: • Design and ship core slices of our new Pricing API, taking them from first design through to production. • Consolidate pricing logic into one service with a clean boundary, keeping pricing behaviour stable throughout the move. • Build the detection and alerting that catches bad or slow prices before they ever reach a customer. • Give our commercial team self-serve answers to "why can't we price this?". • Make pricing measurably faster for every customer quote. RESPONSIBILITIES • Build with impact: design and ship components of the Pricing API that price real energy contracts, owning work from design through to production. • Make it fast: help bring the time to a first customer price down dramatically, without sacrificing accuracy. • Own reliability: build the error handling, observability and alerting that make pricing fail loudly and explainably, never silently. • Sharpen the boundaries: extract and consolidate pricing logic so the pricing engine owns its own behaviour end-to-end. • Close the loop: take your turn handling live pricing questions and incidents, and turn what you learn into structural fixes. REQUIREMENTS Must-Haves • Production backend Python: you have shipped and run an API in production and been on the hook when it broke. • Comfortable with FastAPI and SQL, and with data- and analytics-heavy systems where the correctness of numbers matters. • Product engineering nous: you ask what the price is for and who reads it, not just how to compute it. • You build with agents: Claude or similar is part of your daily workflow for writing, testing and reviewing code. • You can own a project end to end - scoping, delivery, quality - with a tech lead as a sounding board rather than a supervisor. Desirable • Domain knowledge from fintech, energy pricing or neo-utilities, or ad-tech. • Experience working inside or alongside machine learning teams. • AWS and serverless patterns (Lambda, event-driven services, Postgres on RDS). • Polars, or a taste for making numerical code fast. BENEFITS & PERKS • Competitive salary - our current band for this role is [salary band] or equivalent in local currency. • Stock options so everyone has ownership in our mission. • 25 days holiday plus public holidays. Swap public holidays for the ones that matter most to you, and enjoy your birthday off. • Remote first and flexible working, with clear core hours and no internal meetings on Friday afternoons. • Up to GBP1,200 or EUR1,400 per year for your remote setup. • Up to GBP150 or EUR170 per month for wellbeing. THE ROLE: We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join Origination & New Products, a new three-person squad inside Sell Side Growth. Sell Side Growth originates, contracts, and retains the renewable generators whose volume powers our platform - without generators, there's no product. The engine is scaling fast, and much of the manual process underneath today's pipeline - tendering, contracting, onboarding - needs to be rebuilt to handle that growth rather than buckle under it. This is a deep, hands-on IC role, not a squad-lead one - that's owned by the Staff/Senior Staff engineer leading the initiative. You're free to go all-in on the hardest technical problems: integration with Rosso (our pricing and settlement engine), Control Room (our core tendering and pipeline platform), and the deal-gating risk tooling that lets us take on genuinely new categories of commercial risk safely. We're not hiring for leadership polish here. We're hiring a ridiculously good engineer. In your first 12 months, you might: • Own architecture-level decisions on the integration-heavy systems connecting Origination & New Products to Rosso, Data, and Billing. • Help ship the first new product category live and generating qualified pipeline within 6 months. • Help solve the tendering automation problem that currently limits how much volume the team can quote on - one of the highest-leverage levers for supporting our growth. • Contribute to productising a currently manual, error-prone pricing process that's already turning away large, complex deals. • Design deal-gating risk tooling for commercial risk categories that don't exist yet at tem, within our React/TypeScript and Python/AWS serverless stack. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Go deep on hard systems: Own architecture-level decisions on integration-heavy systems, reasoning clearly about boundaries, contracts, and failure modes. • Build for ambiguity: Take a piece of an undefined, commercially-driven problem and turn it into a shippable plan, within the direction your squad lead sets. • Work across boundaries: Deliver on dependencies that sit with teams you have no authority over, such as Rosso, Data, and Billing, getting integrations right without needing to own the relationship. • Build with impact: Design, build, and ship the hardest parts of the new-product build sequence yourself, backend-first but comfortable moving into the React/TypeScript front end when it matters. • Maintain high standards: Write clean, well-tested code, contribute to code reviews, and help improve team practices and documentation. REQUIREMENTS: Must-Haves: • Deep technical depth in backend and systems design, with a track record of owning architecture-level decisions on complex, integration-heavy systems. • Comfortable in our core stack: Python, AWS serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge), and event-driven architectures. React/TypeScript exposure is a plus but not the bar. • Comfort operating without a full spec: able to take a defined slice of an ambiguous problem and turn it into a shippable plan. • Experience delivering work where a critical dependency sits with a team you have no authority over. • Proven product delivery experience: experience as a Full …
