Synthesia is the world’s leading AI video platform for business, used by over 90% of the Fortune 100. Founded in 2017, the company is headquartered in London, with offices and teams across Europe and the US. As AI continues to shape the way we live and work, Synthesia develops products to enhance visual communication and enterprise skill development, helping people work better and stay at the center of successful organizations. Following our recent Series E funding round, where we raised $200 million, our valuation stands at $4 billion. Our total funding exceeds $530 million from premier investors including Accel, NVentures (Nvidia's VC arm), Kleiner Perkins, GV, and Evantic Capital, alongside the founders and operators of Stripe, Datadog, Miro, and Webflow. THE ROLE: We're looking for a Staff (L6) Product Designer to lead design for some of Synthesia's AI-native, agentic Sessions product surfaces. Sessions are the experiences where employees learn through conversation, companies lrun a survey at scale, and AI becomes a direct participant in how work gets done - not just a tool behind the scenes. This area is central to redefining what a video platform can be: moving upstream from content creation into workforce development, and making complex AI capabilities feel natural, trustworthy, and effective for everyday users. You'll operate as a senior IC: setting direction, influencing roadmap decisions, shaping bets with Product and Engineering leaders, and raising the craft bar. In practice, this role is about solving AI-native design problems, for example: • Designing real-time, conversational avatar experiences that feel engaging and natural - not robotic or gimmicky - for employees learning and practising skills at work. • Creating interaction patterns for AI-driven workflows that give users the right amount of control, transparency, and trust without overwhelming them with complexity. • Improving output quality through better structure, guidance, and feedback loops - helping users understand what the AI is doing, catch issues early, and iterate with confidence. • Working at the frontier where AI changes what "interaction" means, and the best patterns are genuinely still being invented. IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL: • Own major AI-native bets end-to-end, from problem framing to shipped outcomes and iteration. • Set a design vision for our "Sessions" surface, and influence adjacent product areas to stay coherent. • Partner closely with Product and Engineering to define what "great" looks like (principles, quality bar, success metrics) and then drive toward it. • Prototype and test interaction models quickly - including novel agentic and conversational patterns - and know when high-fidelity matters. • Raise the bar on craft: interaction design, UI quality, systems thinking, and consistency across AI-native experiences. YOU SHOULD APPLY IF YOU BRING: • Significant experience designing complex, high-usage product surfaces - ideally including AI-native products, agentic features, conversational interfaces, or products where the system takes meaningful autonomous action. • Strong craft in interaction design and visual design, and a track record of shipping work that measurably improves the product experience. • Comfort operating in ambiguity: you can turn unclear and fast-moving problem spaces into crisp direction, and you do not wait for perfect clarity. • Systems thinking: you understand how AI capabilities, model constraints, and product architecture shape what's actually possible in the UX - not just what looks good on a screen. • Excellent communication in design reviews and cross-functional decision-making contexts. • Experience designing workflows where trust, transparency, and user control are central - helping users feel confident in AI-driven outputs rather than confused or excluded. • A track record of tackling novel problems in maturing product spaces, and shaping the product from early-stage bets through to execution. • The ability to leverage feedback from users and customers to ensure the product continues to meet real needs - including enterprise users with high stakes around quality, compliance, and scale. AT SYNTHESIA WE EXPECT EVERYONE TO: • Put the Customer First • Own it & Go Direct • Be Fast & Experimental • Make the Journey Fun You can read more about this in this public Notion page: https://synthesia.notion.site/How-we-work-at-Synthesia-f794caa72f8446efb6be22b551ce0fa2 BENEFITS • A flexible, remote friendly role based out of Europe or one of our hubs in London, Copenhagen, Munich, or Zurich. • 25 days of annual leave + public holidays in the country where you are based. • A generous referral scheme. • Work from home set up. • At Synthesia, you can work from anywhere (within reason) in the world for up to 60 days per year! • A huge opportunity for career growth as you’ll help shape a …

About the role Synthesia Roleplay Sessions is a training tool that lets people practice real conversations with AI avatars. Instead of just watching training videos, learners do interactive roleplay exercises, like practicing a sales pitch or handling a customer complaint with an AI coach. The AI gives instant feedback so people know what they did well and what to improve. Managers can use a dashboard to track which employees have completed their training, see how well they performed, and measure if the training actually improved their skills. The whole platform is built around learning by doing rather than just passive video watching. For your ML engineer role, you'd be building the AI engine that makes the coaching work. That means creating the models that listen to what learners say during roleplay, score their performance, generate helpful feedback in real time, and decide how the AI avatar should respond next based on what the learner does. This is an applied ML position, not a research one . We expect you to have a good understanding of ML but on the other side to be a good product-focused software developer as you will be expected to work on different products. Please bring with you: • Ability to apply your machine learning knowledge to solve real product problems. • At least seven (7) years of experience as a software engineer, with at least 2 years at senior level. • Experience in a high-performing engineering team operating at scale, whether in a scale-up or established organisation recognised for strong engineering culture. • Strong alignment with commercial success. • Pragmatism and bias towards action. This role requires comfort with fast iteration. Why join us? We’re living the golden age of AI. The next decade will yield the next iconic companies, and we dare to say we have what it takes to become one. Here’s why, Our culture At Synthesia we’re passionate about building, not talking, planning or politicising. ABOUT THE ROLE Synthesia's long-term vision is to build the best human-interactive models: systems that don't just talk to people, but perceive and respond to them, reacting to a user's actions and emotions, not only their words. Today over 60,000 businesses rely on our platform, and the next leap in what we can offer them depends on models that combine text, audio, and video into a single real-time interactive experience. As a Staff Research Engineer, you'll join the Voice team within our 40+ person R&D department, but your scope will extend well beyond voice. You'll help define and drive that broader vision across teams, proposing ambitious research directions and taking direct ownership of the design and implementation of its most critical components. You'll work directly with our voice lead and collaborate tightly with our video teams and other senior members of the org. Concretely, you'll work on voice to voice models that produce text and voice simultaneously. Models that can reason, interrupt the user with back channeling and talk. Models that feel like you are having a natural conversation with, without the feeling of turn taking that is dominant in current speech to speech models. Your role would be to partner in defining a roadmap, implementing it and shipping the outcomes to product. What you'll do • Shape our roadmap to create new model capabilities and unlock new functionality for our customer base, on both short and long time horizons. • Propose novel multi-modal system architectures (especially text and voice). • Develop and evaluate streaming and conversational systems for low-latency, interactive voice-video synthesis. • Design solutions that reinforce emotional expressiveness and natural interaction. • Implement and bring designs to life, from pretraining through post-training. • Integrate and test novel architectures (neural codecs, diffusion, flow-matching) to enhance realism and responsiveness. • Define new evaluation metrics for conversational systems, including latency-aware and interaction-based measurements. • Track the latest research in audio-visual diffusion, autoregressive models, neural codecs, and multimodal LLMs. • Curate new datasets to complement existing data. • Lead post-training initiatives like DPO, fine-tuning, and distillation to bring models to shipping quality. • Ship models to production with optimised runtime to serve customers, and address their feedback thereafter. YOU'LL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE • The ability to bring novel ideas and designs that advance the field of interactive multimodal systems. • Strong understanding of generative modelling, ideally applied to sequential or multimodal data. • Hands-on experience with large language models or similar transformer-based architectures. • High proficiency in PyTorch, including distributed training and model optimization. • A solid grasp of time-series modeling and tokenization, preferably in the context of audio, speech, or video. • A demonstrated ability to prototype quickly, test hypotheses, and iterate efficiently. • Proven experience training deep learning models end-to-end, from data preparation through evaluation. • Strong general software engineering skills, enabling contributions to a large, shared research infrastructure. PARTICULARLY RELEVANT EXPERIENCE • Having shipped a generative model into a live product used at meaningful scale, not just published or prototyped it. • Working on conversational or interactive systems where latency, responsiveness, and user experience were first-class constraints, not afterthoughts. • Working on LLMs with large scale trainings leadings to models with decent reasoning capabilities • Owning a research problem end to end: from architecture proposal through pretraining, post-training, and production deployment. • Collaborating across modalities or teams (e.g. audio and video, or research and product) to ship a unified system. BONUS POINTS FOR • Experience with real-time or streaming architectures. • Familiarity with state-of-the-art architectures in audio and speech generation, such as diffusion models, neural codecs, flow-matching …

Responsibilities:

• Shape our roadmap to create new model capabilities and unlock new functionality for our customer base, on both short and long time horizons. • Propose novel multi-modal system architectures (especially text and voice).

THE OPPORTUNITY At Synthesia we really care about video generation, especially about human centric avatar video generation. This led us to release models such as EXPRESS-Video https://synthesiaresearch.github.io/express-video/, and soon our latest video model - these are the best avatar video models in the world, and we are committed to continuing and double down our efforts in leading that area. Our goal is to get to human centric video models that can generate arbitrary long videos at high resolution with arbitrary actions and events. That means continuously training large generative video models from scratch with the proprietary data pipelines and compute infrastructure to support it at scale. We are looking for a technical leader who owns the full stack end-to-end, someone who bridges pre-training and post-training, sets long-term direction alongside research leadership, and is personally present at the hardest parts of the work. If building foundation model capability from the ground up at a company genuinely committed to leading the field sounds like the right next challenge, this role was written for you. ABOUT THE ROLE Synthesia's video generation capability is core to everything we ship. It involves roughly 15 people working daily across pre-training and post-training stages, and the complexity of coordinating across those stages, at the scale of compute and data we now operate, requires a different kind of technical leadership. We're looking for a Principal Research Engineer (L7) to own the full technical stack for offline video generation. This is a senior individual contributor position with outsized scope and influence. You'll partner directly with research leadership and team leads to define long-term strategy, resolve the hardest cross-cutting technical problems, and raise the bar for how quickly research reaches product. The person we're looking for has trained large generative models from scratch, not supervised it from a distance, but done it, debugged it, and shipped it. More than that, they're driven by a genuine ambition to push what's possible in video generation, and they care deeply about seeing that work land in product and reach users. What you'll do • Own the end-to-end technical direction for offline video generation, spanning pre-training and post-training, resolving the artificial boundary between those two stages in service of shipping better models faster. • Partner with research leadership and team leads to define a unified long-term roadmap, broken into achievable objectives, and drive execution against it. • Identify the most critical technical gaps across the video generation pipeline and jump in to unblock them, whether that means architectural decisions, training stability, post-training alignment, or cross-team coordination. • Increase the velocity at which research ships to product: accelerate problem-solving, improve research-to-production handoffs, and increase visibility of research output in partnership with PMs. • Coach and elevate more junior researchers and engineers toward senior technical thinking and execution. • Help shape team structure and refine processes to enable high-velocity, cohesive execution across research. You'll thrive in this role if you have • A proven track record training large-scale video generation models from scratch, across multiple nodes, at the scale of millions of hours of data. • Deep experience with post-training techniques at scale: RLHF, GRPO, DPO, and the judgment to know when and how to apply them. • A proven track record data quality and you are not reluctant to question it. • The ability to think strategically about multi-year research direction and execute hands-on at the frontier of what the team is building. • Strong cross-functional influence: you shape how teams work together without needing positional authority to do it. • A leadership style grounded in technical involvement. You lead by example, inspire through craft, and communicate with clarity. • Genuine hunger to unlock new capabilities and an obsession with shipping. You're not satisfied by research that stays in a notebook. You want it in the hands of users. …

Responsibilities:

• Own the end-to-end technical direction for offline video generation, spanning pre-training and post-training, resolving the artificial boundary between those two stages in service of shipping better models faster. •…

We’re looking for a strong generalist with a systems mindset: • someone who is comfortable working across infrastructure, backend systems, and tooling, and who has seen ML systems in practice. • this is not a pure ML Engineer role. We’re especially interested in people who think deeply about reliability, scalability, performance, and resource efficiency in complex production environments. This is a hands-on IC role with significant ownership. You’ll help shape how our ML platform evolves as we scale the number of models, workloads, tools and teams relying on it. WHAT YOU’LL DO • Design and improve the platform systems that support model training, evaluation, and production serving. • Build infrastructure and tooling that make ML workloads more reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient. • Develop internal tools and workflows that are easy to operate both by humans and by agents. • Work on the architecture behind how models are deployed, served, and operated across research and product environments. • Improve how we schedule, monitor, and debug workloads running on GPUs and cloud infrastructure. • Develop internal tools and abstractions and agentic systems that reduce operational overhead for researchers and engineers. • Drive improvements across observability, automation, reliability, and developer experience. • Collaborate closely with researchers and product engineers to understand pain points and turn them into robust platform capabilities. • Contribute to technical direction and make pragmatic architectural tradeoffs as the platform grows. YOU’LL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE • Strong experience building or operating production systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability. • A systems mindset: you naturally think in terms of bottlenecks, failure modes, interfaces, resource usage, and long-term operability. • Solid hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, Linux, and infrastructure automation. • Experience with Kubernetes and operating distributed workloads in production. • Strong coding skills, ideally in Python or similar languages used for backend systems and tooling. • Strong judgment around where automation adds leverage, and where human control and reliability matter most. • Experience building internal platforms, developer tooling, or infrastructure abstractions used by other engineers. • Comfort working in ambiguous environments and taking ownership of open-ended technical problems. • A pragmatic approach: you care about solving the right problem well, not over-engineering. PARTICULARLY RELEVANT EXPERIENCE • Operating ML infrastructure or model serving systems in production. • Supporting research or data-intensive workloads. • Working with GPU-based systems or other performance-sensitive infrastructure. • Experience with observability and debugging in distributed systems. • Familiarity with Terraform, Datadog, GitHub Actions, or similar tools. BONUS POINTS FOR • Experience building agentic or LLM-powered internal tools. • Experience with workflow orchestration systems such as Temporal. • Experience working at the boundary between research and production engineering. • Familiarity with performance optimization, scheduling, or resource allocation problems. • Experience building lightweight product or developer-facing tools.

This is a unique opportunity for experts in machine learning and diffusion models to shape the future of AI video agents that can think, act, and react like humans. As part of our Interactive Avatars Team, you’ll work on cutting-edge research with a clear focus on turning breakthrough ideas into real product capabilities. You’ll join a team that moves fast, iterates often, and builds models that ship and make a meaningful impact. Example tasks and responsibilities include: • Adapt diffusion models to incorporate diverse conditioning signals (e.g., audio, motion, interaction cues). • Develop methods for streaming infinitely long video sequences at real-time rates. • Work on the perceptual layer of interactive agents, including understanding user audio and generating appropriate contextual reactions. • Improve lip-sync accuracy, motion realism, and overall visual quality in video diffusion models. • Build robust evaluation frameworks and test suites to enable continuous quality tracking. • Collaborate closely with our data team to define data needs and ensure high-quality datasets. • Stay up to date with research in world models, interactive human/agent modeling, diffusion models, and related areas. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: • Comfortable owning and executing on the responsibilities listed above. • Strong ML (e.g., diffusion, GANs, VAEs) and computer vision background with relevant industry experience. • Hands-on experience with diffusion models (ideally avatar-centric or video-focused) and up to date with recent advances. • Proficient in PyTorch and familiar with modern ML frameworks and tooling. • Strong Python engineering skills, confident with git and version control, and a commitment to clean, maintainable research code. • Outcome-driven, detail-oriented, and motivated to push state-of-the-art research into real product impact. • Clear communicator of hypotheses, experiments, and results. WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT: • Experience with audio-conditioned video diffusion models and deep knowledge of recent video DiT architectures. • Demonstrated ability to own the full model development pipeline end to end, from data preparation to model design, training, and evaluation. • A strong publication record in areas such as world models, interactive agents, or video diffusion models.
